Overview
Dachshunds — aka “Daxies” — are bold little hounds with long bodies, short legs, and huge personalities. Originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers, they’re now beloved for their loyalty, humor, and cuddle-loving nature.
Temperament
Lively, curious, and brave. Daxies are affectionate and often bond tightly with one person. They’re playful, vocal, and love burrowing.
Exercise Needs
Moderate. Daily walks and indoor play are key, but avoid jumping or stairs — their long backs are prone to injury. Mental stimulation is just as important.
Recommended Food
Look for joint-supporting formulas and weight control blends. Brands like Hill’s Science Diet, or Orijen are great. Avoid overfeeding — Daxies can be prone to obesity.
Grooming
Depends on coat type:
• Smooth: Low maintenance
• Long-haired: Brush 1–4 times/week
• Wire-haired: Needs regular trimming and brushing
Affection Level
High. Daxies are snuggle bugs who love being close. They’re happiest curled up beside you — or under your duvet.
